- Find the issues causing restricted reach before restarting advertising budgets
01. The Problem & Full Account Audit
Finding what was actually causing limited delivery
The client was facing issues with the advertising setup. Before starting or changing campaigns, we decided to first check the account properly and understand what was actually causing the problem.
The first step was checking Facebook and Instagram account access and connection. Once account access was verified, we moved to the advertising audit on Google Ads.
02. What We Found: The Over-Targeting Trap
Why the campaign had become too restricted to learn
The audit showed that the campaign had become too restricted because too many targeting conditions were being used together:
- Too many audience layers: Keywords, interests, audiences, and user lists were being stacked together.
- Audience was too small: The user list did not have enough historical data and was further restricting delivery.
- Location targeting was too narrow: Multiple city restrictions were limiting the available reach.
- Too many filters: With all these conditions combined, Google had very little room to find the right people.
- The campaign did not have enough room to learn: The account needed more open data before adding targeting restrictions.
03. Our Recommendation & Key Takeaway
Simplifying campaign structure to unlock algorithm learning
Instead of adding more targeting, we recommended simplifying the campaign. For the first campaign, the focus was to give Google enough room to explore the audience and start generating data. Especially for YouTube, we recommended starting broader and then using collected data to make targeting specific.
The Key Takeaway
The issue was not a lack of targeting. There was too much targeting. Our role was to identify what was restricting the account, explain the problem clearly, and give the client a practical direction before putting more money into the campaign.
Data & Sourcing Note: Diagnostic audit conducted across Google Ads and Meta Business Suite account logs.
Key Strategic Principles
- 1The issue was not a lack of targeting — there was too much targeting.
- 2Do not combine unproven user lists with multiple keyword layers and narrow geo-fences simultaneously.
- 3Give the algorithm room to explore: Especially on YouTube, start broader and let data inform subsequent refinement.
- 4The 5-Step Turnaround: AUDIT -> FIX -> LAUNCH -> LEARN -> OPTIMISE.
